Distributed system is playing a more and more important role in the wireless world because user devices and network components are expected to be capable of self-organizing into available networks under any possible situations for ubiquitous communication, with minimum human intervention. To meet such growing requirements, self-organization and efficient routing become much significant in distributed wireless networks such as Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs), and especially critical as the networks are composed of heterogeneous wireless devices such as Personal Network (PN).The PN includes all personal devices in wireless Personal Area Networks (PAN) and wired networks. The main purpose of this paper is to propose a novel self-organizing and routing scheme for wireless devices in PN, providing an efficient network layer initialization and management architecture, satisfying the user-centricity at best. Among the PN self-organization schemes proposed so far, most of them do not consider the user-centricity and heterogeneity of the network. Our proposal rightly resolves this problem through a novel Cluster Position (CP) based self-organizing scheme. Furthermore, taking advantage of CP, we propose a hierarchical routing scheme for PN to achieve highly efficient routing on both intra-cluster and inter-cluster level. Performance analyses show that our scheme can provide high efficiency and resource utilization, with relatively low overhead.
