With the prevalence of the vehicles and the construction of the roads, the traffic pressure becomes more and more heavier while the economy intercommunication between cities becomes more and more frequent, so how to control and manage the vehicles effectively becomes a furious issue of the society. As a result the GPS/GPRS vehicle monitor system comes into being. The system integrates the technology of vehicle auto- orientation, data-base, computer and wireless communication.This paper introduces a vehicle monitor system which includes a vehicle-carrying moving terminal and a control centre. The GPRS was chosen after comparing several wireless communication mode. The moving terminal's MCU is ATmega128 and it combines with the two modules Motorola M12 GPS and SIM 100 GPRS.The control center's computer disposes the position information which is received by GPRS module and fulfill a monitor interface by VC++ which contains the function of monitor and query.The system adopts GPRS as the communication mode which takes advantage of GPRS. Such as increasing the rate of data transmission,reducing the error data,enhancing the capability of real time, increasing the transmission flux, reducing the communication charge. It especially adapts to GPS system in which the data is broken out and conquers the disadvantages of the circuit exchange mode such as low data transmission rate and using ability of resource. In addition, the use of the mighty function module ATmega128 makes the work of the hardware easier and shortens the exploitation cycle. The control center's monitor interface looks simple and is easily handled. It possesses the basic ability of the vehicle monitor system. The vehicle-carrying experiment indicates that the hardware of the system possesses favorable stability,small volume, light weight, low power, adapts to wide range variety of the temperature and humidity.
