LO has become a hot topic in web-based learning. Researchers have developed LO in its all aspects since H.Wayne Hodgins first put forward the concept of Learning Object in 1994. "LOs(Learning Objects) are defined here as any entity, digital or non-digital, which can be used, reused or referenced during technology-supported learning" (LTSC, 2000) .LO brings some benefits to distance learning -It is easy to search, manage learning content and customize learning content. And learning resources can be reused and recombined in different contexts.Researchers have spend much time on the definitions,specifications,share and recombination of LO, but little time on its intelligence communication, interoperability and cooperation. People find some disadvantages of LO with the development of distance learning. For example, LOs are usually managed in centralized way and LOs are put on the same server, which easily results in overburden;LO cannot support cooperation or deal with problems in distributed way without the capability of interoperability and cooperation.We try to extend LO with some functions and characteristics of SDO (Super Distributed Object) to overcome the disadvantages of LO. Then a new Learning Object — Super Distributed Learning Object (SDLO) is established. SDLO can be shared and recombined with the advantages of LO. And SDLO can deal with learning resources decentralized and supply users with many Learning Services with the characteristics of SDO.Firstly, a new model—SDLO is proposed. The concept model of SDLO is described, which includes the related definitions, structure, Learning Services and characteristics of SDLO. Secondly, we decompose SDLO to research and implement SDLO easily. Then, the content management model and distributed model of SDLO are established. To the issue of the content management model, we analyze learning content of SDLO, and suggest describing it with ontology to establish a good storage structure of learning content. To the issue of the distributedmodel of SDLO, we implement a kind of Learning Services—Find Associate , which is in the person of distribution, communication, collaboration and interoperability of SDLO. At last, the content management model and distributed model of SDLO are combined through Aglet platform. The result of the experiment suggests that it is possible to extend LO with the characteristics of SDO.Consequently, the providing of SDLO will accelerate the development of web-based learning, and also the design and implementation of software with distribution, communication, collaboration and interoperability.
