Authentication is the first barrier of the information system security field. It is akey field in the information age. Identity authentication has become the basic servicefor its application with the fast progressing of Internet and information going, whichthe identity authentication has got new requirement to discard the old way ofauthentication and design the integrative authentication system, which also is thecurrent of identity authentication technology.With the fast development of electronics, information, computer andnetworks,biometrics has drawn more and more attention. As one of the most excellentidentifying methods in biometrics, fingerprint identification's theory and applicationappeal a lot of interest. Biometrics characterized by fingerprint is an increasingdevelopment trend of user authentication, and has promising application in fouture.But at present identification document is still uesd popularly and widely, thoughit has less and less security affront more and more attack . It makes enormous lossingfor the country and society . So it is necessary enough to protect the identificationdocument. Then the technology of digital watermarking provide a new way to solvethe problem. Digital watermarking as a new mean to provide copyright protection andauthentication of multimedia data has been developing rapidly since 1990's, andbecomes an internationally hot topic at present. A digital watermarking technologyallows users to imperceptibly embed a specifically signal (the watermark) intomultimedia data such as image, text, video and audio by a certain proposed algorithmin order to protect multimedia data and authentication.Customarily, the watermark signal is number, text or picture etc. This kind ofwatermark exists two problems: one is the uniqueness of the watermark, another isthat there is no inevitable contact between the watermark and the owner of the paper.As a result, this kind of method is ineffective. But the fingerprint of the human bodyhave the characters of uniquenee and fixedness, it can be the identity of the people. Sothe two problems aboved can easily solved by using the fingerprint character as thewatermak signal.After summarizing the traditional development and technical character about useranthentication, the user fingerprint identification and digital watermarking areanalyzed and studied deeply. Based on the two technique, the paper uses theiradvantages and makes the fingerprint minutiae data as the watermark . Aferreferencing the international advanced technology and production, the paper propose auser authentication system based on the fingerprint minutiae data as the watermarksignal . The referenced copy of the fingerprint mimutiae data is embedded in a hostimage that is the digital copy of the personal identification document, such as ID card .The biometric data is hidden in every corresponding personal identification document,instead of storing in the biometric database, which greatly reduces the cost andpromotes the security of the system . Furthermore, the fingerprint data provides anadditional cue in authenticating the personal identification document .
