Battlefield visualization technology is the key element in preserving the military information technology supremacy for China's PLA forces in the 21st century. It reveals not only creation from combining battlefield art with advanced scientific technology, but also a commander's ability of enhancing and keeping superiority over enemy troops by his creation from combining battlefield commanding art with advanced scientific technology. Battlefield visualizaion system(BVS) can provide a commander with the tool to pocess the ability of visualizing an ongoing battle.In this paper, the author elaborates techniques to realize battlefield visualization system after thorough analysis into battlefield topography and the state of ongoing battles. With the aid of computer, computer graphics and image processing technology, and on the basis of digital terrain technology, the author vividly displays the military terrains of a battlefield. After that, with analysis into the characteristics of digital relationship between different kinds of numerical informantions, the author aquires new and accurate perceptions into battlefield terrains.In light of general rules of military plotting, the author explains the requirements for realizing battlefield visualizaion system, and does pilot research on methods for visualizing the state of an ongoing battle in three-dimensional way.In the first chapter, the author introduces the background for doing research on BVS, the related concepts concerning BVS, the contents of BVS research, and the prospects for applying BVS in the military forces.In the second chapter, the author expounds how to erect a three-dimensional digital battlefield. Based on constrained irregular triangle net, the author depicts the ways to erect and plot three-dimensional model battlefield terrains with the help of Grid Net DEM, contour lines and digital graphics, and ways to erect models of river systems, roads and buildings.In the third chapter, the autor analyses the ways to create three-dimensionalmilitary marking systems including three-dimensional marking systems for military full-scale objects and for military symbols. And the author analyzes the ways to realize the marking systems afterwards.In the fourth chapter, the author probes into displaying and processing battlefield information with much explanation of the ongoing research into the battlefield commanding system and the battlefield emulation system. The battlefield commanding system is driven with script as the basis, thus the commanding system can demonstrate on the computer the state of the battle under way under the guidance of the battle planning. The battlefield emulation system is driven with shared data as the basis, and the state of the ongong battle will be demonstrate on the computer.In the fifth chapter, the author describes designing and realizing of the battlefield visualizaion system(BVS). In accordance with the above findings, the author elaborates the processes for realzing BVS including the overall framework of BVS, the design of the function for every part of BVS, and the ways to realize BVS.
