All-Optical Wavelength Converters (AOWC's) are key elements in next generation intelligent all-optical networks. High-precision, ultrastable, high-integrated and conveniently controlled AWOCs and their modularization design are very important to fulfill their applications. Financed by National 863 project and Wuhan Technology Innovation Project, an AWOC module with excellent performance is illustrated in detail from the hardware design to the software design in this thesis. The main parts of the thesis are as follows: (1) Several operation mechanisms of AOWC are compared and discussed. The mechanism of wavelength conversion based on Cross-Gain modulation (XGM) in Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) is discussed in detail. The whole design blueprint of the module based on the single-port XGM-SOA is presented. (2) The high quality AWOC module is illustrated in detail from the hardware aspect including SOA and DFB-LD driving circuit, temperature control circuit and Micro-controller control circuit. The parameter (efficiency) of the AOWC can be monitored based on this module with some adjustments. (3) Micro-controller control system is illustrated in detail. The functions of the program and the programming procedure are presented. The monitor system on PC is programmed with Visual Basic language. The functions of the system and its programming procedure are discussed. (4) The parameters of the module are experimentally investigated including precision and stability of the driving current, precision and stability of the temperature control and output result of wavelength conversion (including wavelength conversion rate, conversion eye diagram, conversion efficiency, wavelength conversion range and extinction ratio). Results show that the module holds the advantage of high-precision, ultrastable, high-integrated and control conveniently. (5) The module has passed the test of Hubei Quality Test Center for Electronics Products with good performance such as 10Gb/s wavelength conversion rate, 10dB output signal extinction ratio, 30nm wavelength conversion range and 0dB insertion loss. The project has passed the examination of the experts organized by the Technology Bureau of Wuhan city.
