With the improvement of people's living standard and the increasing of security requirements in our living and working circumstance, the video monitoring system is developed rapidly in recent years. In the past years most of monitoring systems were based on anolog technology, until the end of 90's had the video monitoring been entered from anolog age to digital age, which named digital video monitoring system. Now most of digital video monitoring systems on the market work by a image capturing card in PCI socket which work unstably, price is too high, and can not work in bad circumstance, and so on. On the other hand, many powerful embedded processors, such as TI's DSP and Motolora's PowerPC appear, whose performance is higher and higher correspondingly price is lower and lower.Especially, DSP chips include abundance of peripheral interface and has very high programmed ability, which make the hardware and sofoware of video monitoring system be implemented easily.But also, this embedded system conquer many deficiencies of the system based on PC. As a result of the increasing performance-price-ratio, adding in small area , low lost and power consumption, the proportion of embedded chips in video monitoring field become much higher.This paper mainly research and design a universal embedded video monitoring system.The central processor is TI's dedicated multimedia processor—TMS320DM642. This system could capture at most 4-route video signals at the same time, which brings down the cost effectively.The captured data are processed and stored into IDE hard disk, or transmitted to remote server to store. At first, the minimal system was designed, including DSP,power circuit,reset circuit and clock circuit.Then the peripheral devices were extended,including video circuit,audio circuit,local store circuit,Ethernet transmit circuit and UART control circuit.At last, this paper discussed some problems that need pay more attention to during the design procedural.
