The wide use of power electronic equipment makes harmonic problem deteriorated increasingly, and harmonic becomes the primary factor influencing power quality. Active power filter is considered as the most effective method to restrict harmonic. Research and application are widely studied. With the development of power electronics components, computer, and control technology, the method of using active power filter (APF) has been rapidly developed and widely used.This paper presents the significance and way of Harmonic-suppression at first, then the background, development and future prospect of active power filter is described in detail. Then, the thesis introduces the classifications and the structure of the active power filters.Especially further analyses are made on the operational principle of the shunt active power filter. The paper also introduces real time harmonic and reactive current detection methods which are base on instantaneous reactive power theory.Active power filter (APF) is a new method to realize harmonic elimination and VAR compensation which uses the LC filters . After groundwork of deep analysis of theory of instantaneous reactive power detecting methods diversified schemes for high frequency harmonic and reactive current is presented and the diagrams ofactualization are put forward.Then simulation of signal processing section is implemented by selecting one type in SIMULINK environment of MATLAB software. o Finally experiment device applies TMS320F2812 which is produced by Texas Instrument Corporation as a CPU and PS21867 which is used as a main circuit.The simulation results and experiment results verify validity and effectiveness of the current detection method and the control strategy.
