Semantic Web portals are next generation of semantically enhanced Web portals, which constructed based on Semantic Web technology. Ontology query techniques are backbone technology for Semantic Web portals. In different phases of Semantic Web portals, they should provide appropriate ontology query facilities to meet the requirements of ontology query for different users in Semantic Web portals. However currently most Semantic Web portals haven't supply the advanced ontology query functions required in ideal Semantic portals, such as ontology browsing, ontology search and inference-powered query. They haven't revealed the potential as the applications driven by Semantic Web technology sufficiently.Under the background stated above, the approaches of realizing ontology browsing and ontology search in ideal Semantic Web portals are presented in this paper, including processing flow, main algorithm and the design ideas of user interfaces, by researching the requirements of ontology query in perfect Semantic Web portals. Basing on the approaches, a prototype tool for ontology query in Semantic Web Portals called OQS4SWP is designed and implemented, which supply the functions for OWL ontology browsing and search, in order to meet the requirements of accessing the information of ontology in ontology base of Semantic Web portals. Case studies show that the implementation of OQS4SWP is effective, and the realization of ontology query facilities required in Semantic Web portal based on current open-source ontology API is feasible.
