Xu Zhucheng, who was a press reporter, editor, commentator on political events,patriotic journalist, was very brilliant in the contemporary history of China. Under ZhangJiluan and Hu Zhengzhi's firm directions, he had worked on two well-known newspapers-DAGONG DAILY and THE STANDARD for 30 years, where he became to an outstandingnewspaper editor and a revolutionary publicist. Xu Zhucheng was very political in outlookand he was far too independent for publishing a newspaper. He was of the opinion that editorsshould write editorials concerning politics in order to save the nation. He advocated standingon one's feet at every aspect of the problem, particularly the economy. Editors must keepeconomy independent before having the freedom of speech. As an independent newspaper,editors must make the general populace have much benefit, through insisting on independentvital spark and taking interests for them. Xu Zhucheng thought highly of the innovation ondesigning the page layout. He raised "Editorial Art" from an esthetic point of view andconsidered it to be very important to keep the page layout harmony and unity. During his20-year-editing-profession, Xu Zhucheng insisted on reporting news in the manner ofobjectivity, righteousness and rationality. He had never accepted any political investment,never yielded to dignitaries and never twisted something which he reported. Xu Zhuchengdevoted himself hart and sour to the newspaper editing enterprise. His views on theimportance of the editors were that they occupied a vital role to the newspaper. A reporter oran editor, he must have the basic and firm skill of interview, whether he can interview aboutthe scoop successfully is the sector for him. Xu Zhucheng once relied upon his wisdom andkeen wit to report a large number of scoops and set up an example for reporters. In XuZhucheng's opinion, firstly, it was very important to editors that they should keep up with thetimes, not behind the times. Secondly, editors should create the cultural brand for thenewspaper, in order to form a kind of unique culture which could affect audiences. At thesame time, he requested editors to have the good professional moral, they not only became anews expert, but also a management specialist who could do well about the personnelmanagement. That is to say, editors should treat the talented men generously. In XuZhucheng's time, he had made a major contribution towards the modern democratic politicsand the progress of culture. His editorial practice of newspaper and his thoughts, whichcomposed a glory page in the history of journalism, were editors' valuable wealth. It alsoclarifies the further significance to today's periodical work.
