With our country transportation sustained and rapid development, many pavement management departments put PMS(pavement management system)in practice in order to suiting for the high-quality pavement maintenance management. However pavement distress which is an important index in pavement data is inspected by person's visual, and this inspecting approach is very costly and dangerous. Therefore, it is important to exploit pavement distress inspecting system and carry on the study on pavement distress automatic inspection.In this paper, we use the image processing, sensor technology to exploit pavement distress automatic inspection system, and carry on pavement distress processing research in order to promote the intelligentized technology development of the highway surface distress inspection.Pavement distress image segmentation is the premises of pavement distress model recognition. To take the automatic measurement of the distress, here, the Sobel arithmetic, the ameliorated Sobel arithmetic and the Canny arithmetic are used. And we draw a conclusion that the Canny arithmetic is most perfect. In order to achieve more perfect segmentation effect, at last, we apply a new Canny arithmetic with a threshold and it achieve a perfect effect.After segment the pavement distress image correctly, a method based on the arithmetic of projection is used in order to define the different type of the pavement distress, and it works perfectly. And then a arithmetic which is to calculate the grade of the distress is put forward in this paper.Pavement distress data management software is programmed. This software interface is friendly and convenient to operate. The software has pavement distress data query and print etc. Meanwhile, Pavement distress real-time inspecting experiment is done at 30 km/h inspecting speed. This arithmetic can recognize typical pavement distress.
