With the ever development of the technology of the medical image processing and analyzing, computer graphics, virtual reality and computer network, it becomes a focus of the medical image community from 2D medical image to 3D medical image visualization, and it becomes a multi-disciplinary subject with developing continuously.The implementation of medical image 3D visualization based on Linux is mainly studied. By introducting the user interface and architecture of SNAP , with the advanced toolkits in the world, i.e. FLTK(Fast Light Toolkit), VTK(Visualization ToolKit) and ITK(Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit), the paper discusses the concrete implementation of software in terms of user interface design and 3D visualization. For reading the 3D image file of heart based on AVS field file format, the paper also designs and implements the plugin of image IO in ITK by using the plugin IO mechanism of ITK. There is a satisfactory result while this plugin is used in SNAP.
