Traditional methods of time synchronization are communication with standard clock source by telephone dialers or radio, or using GPS receiver, which are harsh to realize. With the rapid development of computer networks, the Network Time Protocol was come forth and has developed rapidly. It remedys the defect of traditional means, and brings the facilities to some time sychronization systems (such as the distribution system ). On the basis of further studying the operation principle and multiple algorithms of NTP, we designed and developed a kind of simple NTP server and customer software, which have implemented that using NTP protocol finish network time synchronization in LAN. The thesis is described simply as following: 1. Studying the NTP theory of operation and three work modes, whereafter explaining the definition of three modes. 2. Introducing two different network structure, and their respective algorithms. Providing specific informations of multilayer network algorithms: filtering, selection and combination. We have accomplished a absolute C-language program module of NTP algorithms, which can be called by the client time synchronization software. 3. Based on the NTP algorithms, we have a rudimentary grasp of how to adjust local hardware clock. Thus we analyze the mathematics mode and the hardware mode of the NTP Clock. 4. Considering the characteristic of Network Time Synchronization System –strict real-time processing requirement but small quantity of data, we devised a project of Network Time Server to embed the communication protocols in a singlechip and developed both the hardware and software of the system. 5. Winsock technology are used to implement NTP communications with remove NTP server in the design of the time synchronization software in client host. At last the thesis sums up and prospects the research simply.
