The rapid development of multimedia communication is changing the life styles of human beings. It demands more sophisticated video processing and transmission techniques. Especially, digital video services, which are represented by interactive real-time video communication, is the bottle neck of multimedia communication because of their high technical requirements such as broad band, low delay and low bit error rate. The development of video communication is strongly supported by the advances in the research on video compression algorithms and release of coding standards, especially H.264 which can provide equivalent objective quality at a data rate about 50% lower than that required by H.263 (Baseline) and MPEG-4 (SP). However, the algorithm complexity of H.264 dramatically increases due to the adoption of a number of video coding tools. How to cut down the complexity of H.264 and make it be a practical standard in real-time communication has been a popular issue. This article goes deep into the decoder part of the H.264 recommendation and speed it up. First, introducing some new coding feature of the H.264 and meantime illustrates the improved coding efficiency enabled by H.264 relative to existing video coding standards. Then, according the characteristic of H.264 , we bring forward the algorithm in H.264 video coding standard. This algorithm improve the capability of the search template , auto threshold and selection of forecast point. Many test prove this method is good. Base on the character that H.264 standard allows seven kinds of variable block sizes to be used in motion estimation. Make use of the monotonicity of MB distortion and information of surrounding MB to reduce the block mode selective complication. At the same time we get the good effect.
