With the increasing military application of information technology, all kind of weapons and equipment, communication systems, command and control systems, and information and intelligence processing systems are changing to digital direction, and commanders will face comprehensive, multi-service, complex environments of high-tech war. How to handle the massive information, provide the commanders with reliable, useful information on the battlefield, and help the commanders to make correct and effective decisions, will be the key to obtain the battlefield dominance. To transform information superiority into decision superiority and thus enhance the combat effectiveness, naval battlefield visualization is necessary. Three-dimensional visualization of naval command and decision-making situation of the image has provided intuitive, rich battlefield information, which will help commanders to adjust operational plans in time according to the progressive situation of the sea battlefield and provide visualization support to the maritime war simulated training and sea battle situation evaluation.Based on the related research and development at home and abroad, this paper has drawn from the existing research results, compared the existing three-dimensional visualization approaches of battlefield situation, and summed up their respective advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes that under the current technical conditions and application requirements, two-dimensional and three-dimensional visualization approaches should be comprehensively used to express the military situation information.This paper analyzes the important elements in a naval battlefield 3D situation, i.e. the sea battlefield environment and three-dimensional targets, and studies their characteristics and three-dimensional representation forms mainly in the following two aspects.Design of the three-dimensional visualization of the sea battlefield is carried out. This paper focuses on the terrain visualization and the battlefield special effect visualization. It analyzes the various methods of digital elevation map (DEM), uses the format conversion, paging storage, dynamic data organization and scheduling, and texture mapping methods on digital elevation map files for the terrain of large area to improve the realism of the 3D terrain. It studies the terrain scene roaming method based on the viewpoint to improve the realism and immersion of the terrain scene. Then, collision detection is studied aiming at the battlefield special effect visualization. It proposes the dynamic detection technique based on radial-body, which uses the particle system to simulate the battlefield special effect after the collision.Design of the three-dimensional target is carried out. This paper analyzes the 3D target classification, modeling, model file storage and load-in methods. Description freedom model is proposed to enhance local and global three-dimensional models in detail. This paper analyzes the file format that graphics program can easily read. In naval environment, the 3D target geographical coordinate transformation and terrain match methods are proposed, the 3D target motion control methods are studied, and a simple 3D target motion model and human-computer interaction mechanism controlling the 3D target motions are also analyzed.This paper presents a new set of general framework on the sea battlefield three-dimensional visualization, which has efficiently organized the terrain file, texture data, the 3D target descriptive file, and the 3D target model file, providing interfaces for interactive access to 3D target database. This framework can reasonably schedule various data, so as to achieve the separation of data description and graphical display, and support the control on human-computer interaction orders. This paper will be a certain reference and guideline to the research and development of various application systems based on the sea battlefield 3D situations.
