Substrate integrated waveguide (SIW), a novel waveguide structure taking advantage of both of the rectangular waveguide's low loss, low radiation, high Q factor and high power capacity and microstrip's compact and easy integration, has a bright future in applications. A SIW fed microstrip antenna array is designed in the thesis on the basis of analyzing SIW's characteristics.Firstly, SIW's propagation characteristics are analyzed and propagation constantα,βis calculated using multi-line method. Secondly, the precondition for SIW's equivalent to rectangular waveguide is derived from the analysis ofα, and the principles and method to design a SIW is proposed on the basis of formula of effective width. Utilizing SIW as microstrip's fed network, a SIW fed microstrip antenna array consist of 18x8 elements is designed. Then the fed network's design is achieved by analyzing the coupling structure and adjusting coupling structure slot offset as well as the resonance length to implement Taylor-weighted in H-plane. And the series-fed microstrip antenna array's design is achieved by using impedance transformation segments-weighted to implement Taylor-weighted in E-plane. In the end, the two parts were integrated to meet antenna's design criteria. Tests for propagation characteristics of SIW were carried out to testify its similarity on the propagation characteristics between SIW and the rectangular waveguide. Meanwhile, tests for SIW fed microstrip antenna array are carried out to show that its performance meets the design requirement.
