Software user interface is the carrier for information exchange between the user and the computer software system. In the early 1960s appeared the graphical user interface (GUI) which makes a large use of graphical, audio and other interactive media and brings a great convenience to the user. The quality for a GUI's design has a direct influence upon the efficiency for its use, so more and more attention has been given to the design of it. Based on a kind of CAX software system, this paper gives research on its specific design methods of GUI.Firstly, this paper gives an introduction of GUI from its coming into being, through its development, to present situation, and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of the graphical user interface of various types. With the guidance of the user-centered design principle, it puts users of some CAX system into categories and studies characteristics of its info-processing model, considering the features of CAX software itself. Then, it studies theories of usability, semiology and chromatics involved in the design, and proposes design principles for GUI of CAX software, focusing on methods for its interfacial elements and design criterions for icons. Besides, means of evaluating on the design of GUI and its importance is mentioned. Finally, combined with a software project Azure, it introduces a new method for developing the GUI—XUL marking language and its pros and cons and the specific ways to develop it. The results prove that the theories have been successfully applied into practical programs. The study result of this paper provides systematical methods for GUI design of an CAX system. The patterns of software used in this development are rational, the icons are expressive, and the use of color is normative, with a harmonious arrangement, all of which have been confirmed by the experts of this field. Furthermore, good effect has been achieved after a primary use.
