With the rapid growth of information, the method, which makes storage more effective and system higher availability, is to be solved as a problem. In order to solve the above problems, the iSCSI-based storage cluster system is researched and designed. The paper analyzes the protocol of iSCSI, researches the storage cluster about working patterns, storage architectures, as well as crucial technologies. A high-performance and low-cost storage solution, which integrates the iSCSI with storage cluster, is presented, the prototypes of iSCSI-based storage cluster, including iSCSI-SCSNA(iSCSI-based Storage Cluster with Share Nothing Architecture) and iSCSI-SCSSA(iSCSI-based Storage Cluster with Share Storage Architecture), are designed and implemented at last.On the one hand, we analyze the protocol model and application value of iSCSI, on the other hand, an availability model is established for proving the prominent contribution of the dual-computer in availability at first, then, the key technologies of storage cluster are researched and designed. The Heartbeat module is implemented by a novel heartbeat algorithm which changes its heartbeat cycle by adapting the CPU of a computer, and the combination self-check with mutual inspection is carried out when heartbeat detectes. The Failover module is achieved by principle of ARP detection. Data Mirroring System is volume-based and works in LVM, Synchronous Replication Protocol is used to control the writing process, and a log field is designed to store and manage the data which is being operated in the system. In Single Image File System module, the Distributed Lock Management is accomplished by redefinition of the lock about its structure and the management rules. At last, collaboration with the key modules, they are implemented including the goals and design schemes about software and hardware of iSCSI-SCSNA and iSCSI-SCSSA. The analysis and testing on the performance of the system are presented finally.
