Optical Time Domain Reflectometer is a test device can characterize the physical performance of fiber optic link, also named optical backscatter tester. It is a electro optic tester which can make use of the back scatter light generated by Rayleigh scattering。it can detect the light decrease of fiber optic link and the detailed lose related to the length of fiber is also can get. The test by OTDR have many advantages, such as none damage to fiber, one interface interfere, getting data fast and so on. So it can widely used in maintaining the fiber optic link. By using it the fiber length, the transmission lose, the interface lose and fault position can be detected. For the market is mainly occupied by foreign companies, the price of OTDR is very expensive.In this article, the mechanism and key variables of OTDR is researched. The structure and function of each layer is also detailed illustrated. The writer designed a set of electro optical detection and data acquisition system. This system transmit data by PCI wire bus with the exist platform in company. The platform is in charge of human-computer interaction and display. In the end of this thesis, the performance of this system and the lose of fault position is analyzed.The writer successfully made 5 OTDR which can be used in business.
