Animation scene design is an essential part in the whole production process of the animation work, either in 3D or 2D animation. In animation works, scenes usually provide service for the characters, which shows the style of the whole work.And it displays historical background, depicts cultural areas and features, etc. Animation scene includes design of single lens space and scenery, as well as time elements connected with several cameras. The communication and story of characters usually happen in the part of"design of single lens space and scenery", which is the fixed scene in animation scene. There are essential differences between the ways to realize 3D and 2D animation scene design.3D software provides a holographic space in which the observing angle moves with the camera. Therefore, conceiving the lighting effects of 3D fixed camera is critical design mission for the designer. This article starts with a 3D animation scene design project, exploring a method to control the lighting effect of 3D scene and realize the non-photorealistic rendering effect.This article takes the creation of a 3D animation short movie as thread, and primarily studies the scene lighting rendering effect. This animation project needs to display lighting effect at different times in one day, and embody the NPR. According to the plot in animation script, the scene needs to change lighting effect several times, but light adjusting in Maya takes repeated light source adjustment and tentative rendering, which costs lots of time. Considering the production period, the paper induces four time periods based on the script and scene design analysis, and comes up with an applicable method to have quick control in 3D lighting effect based on experiments. Meanwhile, according to the style of animation movie, the paper finds out several ways to realize NPR in Maya.And through compareing and analyzing, as well as testing the different ways, writer of the paper finally decides to use the Vector render to output NPR. And the writer finds out the disadvantages of Vector render in experiments, and combines Maya software render and Vector render with Photoshop, so as to obtain 3D scene rendering effect with two dimensional cartoon effects.The main content of the paper are as follows: First, it studies the method of creating lighting and types of Maya built-in light source frequently used in 3D scenes, and the essence and timely features of natural light source, as well as creation of light array. Then, the paper studies the regularity, setting and management of light source in Maya. According to the demands of animation project,the paper tries to cartoonize the 3D model into two dimensions. The key of the study is finding ways to realize NPR in Maya, and compareing, analyzing, as well as testing the different ways, and evaluating them in functional, applicable and expanded function. Finally the writer decides to use the Vector render to realize NPR 3D models to obtain colorful and bright effect with cartoon outline. Meanwhile, the paper analyzes the disadvantages of Vector render found in experiments, and combines with Photoshop to make up for the weakness in rendering. The emphasis of study is analyzing timely lighting effect in 3D scenes, compiling a lighting control system combined with Mel script in Maya.And then the paper still studies the practical application of this system in Maya scene,verifies that the research method is quite applicable in the field of 3D animation scene design.
