P2P applications are developing rapidly these years and playing an increasingly important role in daily life. However, they also consume a great deal of bandwidth of inter-domain links, which influences the performance of other Internet applications seriously and puts a heavy burden for ISPs (Internet Service Provider). The objective of this paper is to reduce the inter-AS traffic of P2P live streaming applications. The main contributions of this thesis are as follows.Utilizing the advantages of the P2P and overlay network techniques, we propose the framework of a topology-aware live streaming overlay network, called ONLS (Overlay Network for Live Streaming), and research on the key mechanisms of ONLS, including architecture, overlay node deployment, overlay node multicast control and overlay network performance monitoring. The work flow and architecture of the management system of ONLS is designed. By analyzing the number of IP addresses of different ASes, we propose an overlay node deployment scheme based on the IP address distribution. To be more resilient to the"Flash Crowd"events, a self-adaptive overlay node multicast control mechanism is designed. A distributed visualized overlay network performance monitoring model is designed.We also present the simulation results of ONLS and compare its performance with an unstructured P2P live streaming system called GridMedia. To illustrate the optimization of inter-AS traffic in ONLS, we take simulation in different scenarios, and compare the performance of ONLS and GridMedia. The simulation results have shown that the ONLS can reduce the inter-AS traffic and improve the data delivery performance significantly. The simulation results of a randomization deployment scheme in ASes show the advantages of the overlay node deployment scheme based on the IP address distribution.The ONLS management protocol is designed, including the session control protocol and the overlay network maintenance protocol. The message formation and processing flow of the protocols is designed.A prototype system is built and tested to verify the validation and effectiveness of ONLS. The session control protocol, overlay network maintenance protocol and overlay network performance monitor system are tested. The test results show the effectiveness of management protocol and ONLS.Our study provides some new insights for scalable P2P live streaming system with cross-layer optimization.
