With the size increasing of the electricity power network, it is imperative to develop vigorously power communication services for the electricity power companies in remote areas. However, unfortunately most of the existing electricity transmission networks are using the ring network, which is vulnerable to weather and environmental conditions and so it is prone to network failure. Therefore, it has great significance to find out a new network formation which applies to the electricity power transmission in remote areas, and can improve the stability performance of the electricity power transmission network and the scheduling capabilities.In this paper, we focused on the existing electricity transmission network ring, long loop, and high failure probability appeared in two or more points, and proposed the introduction of ASON (Intelligent Optical Network) technology program. ASON technology network had strong protection and recovery capabilities, could significantly improve the network survivability, improved resistance to extreme weather or incidents, and enhanced the end-to-end scheduling capabilities. ASON technology provided ring protection switching and line protection switching, whose switching time was less than 50ms, so multi-points protection could be provided to play a special role in extreme bad weather or accident state. When all the ring protection, line protection were invalid, the intelligent optical network could resume route and implement mesh routing recovery by signaling, which could raise network bandwidth utilization and availability, and improve power optical transmission network quality and performance significantly.Through practical research and data collection analysis, we made a deeply study on functions of electric power communication network in remote areas, special requirements, development orientation , development trends, ASON in the interface protocol and standards, architecture, connection type and business types. On the basis of above analysis and by analyzing characteristics of ASON technology, network architecture, evolution model and related technologies, we summed up the technology advantages in introduction of electric power communication network ASON in remote areas, demonstrated the feasibility of introduction of ASON technology in development plan. Finally, on the basis of OptiX MDS 6600 design software, we made the network design for Rikaze and looked ahead the future prospects of the application of ASON technology on power communication network in remote areas.
