Cylindrical steel material in the national economy has a very wide range of applications, the consistence between its diameter, roundness and other production parameters with the design specifications is directly related to the merits of the final product quality performance. At present, domestic steel pipe diameter measurement system there can not be detected large pipe, the resistance to vibration is limited, complex issues such as system structure. However, testing equipment from abroad has increased in performance, but it's expensive. Therefore, this paper presents a new method which is based on two CCD cameras for measuring diameter of steel tube. It uses two image acquisition cards to connect to two high-resolution CCD cameras, then send the data to the computer for integrated calculation, and the display shows current images and results.The new method first uses Tsai two-step method to calibration, so that we can have the relative coordinates of two CCD cameras. Second it uses image processing to find the edge coordinates from two steel images. At last, based on the data above we could make an external quadrilateral, and then use least squares to find the center of the inscribed circle (the center of steel tube), after this we could obtain the radius of four directions.In the aspect of image processing, as for the special of steel image, we design a new edge detection algorithm. Compared to Roberts operator, Sobel operator and other operators, the new algorithm is not only fast, accurate positioning, continuous edge, but also eliminates the interferential image edges in the background.In the aspect of detection software, we use VisualC++ to write it which meets the demand. The software architecture is optimized for multi-core CPU, it works with four threads, and the speed has improved significantly than the traditional structure. The software is fully functional, simple, friendly interface and stable operation.The laboratory experiments show that the measurement system which this paper designed is not only could measure large-size steel, but also it has simple structure, strong resistance to vibration performance and high accuracy, it is apply to industrial high-speed on line detection.
