In the whole operation of the entire railway system, Wheel set is one of the most important factors on the safety running of the train. Particularly, in recent years, under the condition of the vehicle speeding more and more, vehicle operation safety issue is becoming more prominent. The condition of the wheel set is directly related to the quality and safety about train running. Testing its comprehensive parameter is an important measure to ensure that the train is running safe.The detection method using linear structure laser to detect the wheel wear is introduced in this paper. The paper proposes a new method using line structured line and image sensor to detect the wheel wear and analyzes how to calculate flange height, flange thickness and distance on the inside wheel.The paper devises a measuring system based on above methods. The system uses position sensors to detect and further calculate wheel speed and position. It uses the line structured light to irradiate the wheel tread, and use array CCD to obtain the image of wheel tread. Testing equipment is fixed in the vicinity of the straight railway, which cancomplete the measuring of running wheel's wear one after another. Corresponding experiments both in laboratory environment and real scene are designed to test and analyze the performance of the system, which includes trigger signal experiments, image acquisition experiments, image processing experiments, and the last on-site commissioning tests. The system used to detect the wheel wear of the locomotive, the theoretical accuracy of flange height is to 0.5mm, and the theoretical accuracy of flange thickness is to 0.5mm, and the theoretical accuracy of distance on the inside wheel is to 0.2mm, realized the wheel wear non-contact-line detection, this detection method is easy to implement the digitization of the parameters testing in line with international development.
