Multimedia now become a very key technology in multimedia communication system, it influence both load of network transmission and quality of communications. The paper describes the research of general codecs in multimedia communications, then it describes the hardware codec of S3C6410 of Samsung. Then it describes an multimedia communication terminal based on S3C6410 processor implemented some codec.The main work of this paper is as follows:(l)First of all, the background,content and project's meaning is proposed, the research status of audio/video communication system is introduced at the same time, The key techniques of VOIP include signaling, encoding, Real-time transmission, QOS is introduced too.(2)Multi-media codec has become a very important tech in embedded system development, Besides necessity of codec,the paper also introduces technology used in codec. Then is describes MPEG4 and H.264 detailed, and some open-source codecs, at last it describes the hardware codec and principle of S3C6410.(3)The paper introduces the example of multimedia audio/video communication system with the use of codec, it describe the software architecture of the terminal, The key techniques of VOIP include signaling, encoding. Real-time transmission, QOS is introduced too.(4)At last,it introduce the testing result of the whole system, and provides possible solution for Linux multimedia programming.
