In recent years, optical communications has become one of the basic technologies in modern information society because of its advantages of huge transmission capacity, long transmission distance and transparent transfer. As the development of technology, the explosive growth of data services has brought a great challenge to modern networks. The traditional technologies, i.e. synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) technology, IP technology and Ethernet technology, are unable to meet the all around needs of transmission and bearing in next generation network. Optical packet network converge the huge transmission capability with switching technology for bearing data services. This network can not only effectively support multi-granularity services, but also improve bandwidth utilization. The optical network is evolving toward the simple 2-layer (IP layer and optical network layer) network model direction. Optical packet switching has great advantages in flexibility, fine-grained and bandwidth utilization. The latest research is binding the idea of Label Switching with Optical Packet Switching network, such as GMPLS (Generalized Multiple Protocol Label Switching), LOBS (Label Optical Burst Switching), AOLPS (All-Optical Label Packet Switching), etc. Thus, it is of a great significance that the optical packet network with ideas of label to complete the routing.This paper firstly summarizes the characteristics of optical packet switching network with the key technologies, and makes a deep study of the mechanism of labeled self-routing. Then, this paper fully describes the demand of optical labeled self-routing in optical packet network, and summarizes the current contention (competition for resources) solutions in the aspect of their rational and efficient structures in packet optical network, and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.Based on comprehensive investigation of current technology, this paper did deep research in traditional contention solution with defection routing. In order to overcome the shortcomings of the defection routing based on variable-length self-routing addressed, we proposed labeled self-routing address based on fixed length addressed mechanism. This improved method expresses more than one defection routing using fixed-length address coding algorithm, and completes the routing process. The Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of packets and the environment in outputs of nodes are also taken into consideration. Finally, this paper simulated the new mechanism and did research work about implementation. The simulation results show that this method can improve the network performance effectively.
