As an important part of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), vehicle detection technology can provide the necessary data sources through it acquiring accurate and real-time traffic parameters for ITS, thus achieving traffic real-time monitoring and intelligent management. Because of a small size, high sensitivity, easy of installation and so on, the vehicle detector based on magneto-resistive sensor can solve the disadvantages of the traditional vehicle detectors and provide new ideas and motivation for the development of vehicle detection technology.In the design of magneto-resistive sensor node, the principle of vehicle detection using magneto-resistive sensor has been investigated, the wireless communication based on ZigBee technology between sensor nodes has been researched, the stop and wait protocol has been merged in order to ensure data transmission reliably, thus confirming the feasibility of design of the node. From the overall module design of wireless sensor node, each module of sensor node has been achieved, the anti-electromagnetic interference design has been considered, the vehicle detector based on magneto-resistive sensor has been developed finally. By design and implement of software of the vehicle detector, the functions of data collection, transmission and processing have been achieved.The vehicle detection signal which has been sampled when vehicle passing through the detection zone has been analyzed deeply; the vehicle detection algorithms have been researched on the basis. For vehicle presence detection, ATDA algorithm has been realized and improved, avoiding false detection and missed detection. For vehicle speed detection, the design and implement of time synchronization between nodes not only improves the accuracy but also reduces the burden of microprocessor of vehicle detector and system power consumption. It is verified the feasibility and the accuracy of vehicle detection algorithms by using collected data.The work accomplished and disadvantages of this paper are summarized, and the direction of future research is indicated.
