Snowfall is a kind of meteorological elements, which is the most difficult to measure. Every year snow disasters bring immeasurable losses to the society and seriously threat the safety of people's life and property. On the basis of introducing measurements of snow depth at home and abroad, a wireless, non-contact, and automatic method to measure snow depth is proposed in this thesis. It uses the ultrasonic to form the measurement system, establishes wireless sensor networks on the basis of ZigBee technology, and sends the measurement data to the control centre PC through the wireless sensor network. In this way, The system realizes the real-time monitoring of the snow process allows people to take corresponding actions according to the disaster situation and publishes the appropriate information to remind the drivers to reduce traffic accidents.The expressway snow depth measurement system in this thesis can be divided into two parts:one is measuring system, which controls the ultrasonic sensor transmitter, receives the signals of the ultrasonic by the core STC89C52RC processor and calculates surface snow depth on the basis of considering temperature compensation. The other is wireless sensor networks, which forms the wireless sensor networks on the basis of ZigBee technology, receives the snow depth data sent by measurement system to the core CC2430 processor and sends the processed data to Control Center PC.This paper first analyzes the physical characteristics of ultrasound, the principle of ultrasonic measuring system, factors affecting the precision of the system and a corresponding compensation. Secondly, it designs a measurement system hardware schematic by comparing several programs and gives the detailed flow chart of the software program. Thirdly, wireless network is set up by using CC2430, the wireless data communications is realized on the basis of ZigBee technology and the measurement system data is sent. Finally, it is the measurement test. Because snow has a high external demand, environments of different interfaces, and different temperature were selected to collect different sets of data to verify the accuracy and reliability of measurement system. The results show that the system in the room basically meets the design requirements when it was tested indoors. On the basis of a good measurement system, the data of snow depth will be sent to the host computer by the LABVIEW software development through the wireless sensor network.
