In the 21st century, FPGA is the most decisive integrated circuit and FPGA technology is frontier in the electronic design field. FPGA has rich logic resources, high integration, flexibility design and wide utilization, etc, which has been widely used in digital system design. Mastering the method and skill of programmable logic devices is of crucial importance for realization of modern digital system design, as well as the Electronic Engineer's essential knowledge. However, we haven't done enough at present.In the paper, structures, application characteristics& fields of Xilinx FPGA device are thoroughly discussed and studied, which lay foundation for the subsequent design work. Implementation of digital system based on FPGA is mainly studied; applying the FPGA in endoscopic visualization, chip design and digital video conversion interface is discussed as well. All the designs are based on FPGA technology's advanced "Top-down" modular design thought, and control circuit is completely realized by FPGAs, which make the whole system size and power consumption drop substantially, improve the reliability, simplify the design process, shorten the design cycle and reduce the size of module and design cost.According to the principle and requirement of the 1602 Liquid Crystal Display, a LCD control circuit is designed with HDL on the XC3S400 FPGA of Xilinx. The LCD control circuit is realized by Xilinx ISE Design Suite 10.1 software including Compiling, Synthesis, Placement and Routing which creates hardware Bit file download into the FPGA. ModelSim SE simulation and test results indicate that the LCD control system, which achieved by FPGA—the control IC, can realize the control function needed. It is proved to be effective and can take the place of MCU in driving LCD. The LCD controller work well and has flexible control.A data storage and display system for static graphics is also designed by the FPGA technology. This system mainly contains the FPGA internal logical design, data buffer circuit and peripheral control interface hardware circuit design. Hexadecimal data of JPG pictures is first stored in RAM writing and reading cache module through the FPGA chips, then sent to VGA interface by the FPGA tube feet, and finally displayed on TFT LCD screen. Test results achieved the basic requirements of static graphics data storage and display.
