With the development of wireless communication, computer and electronic technologies, more and more terminals are equipped with multiple network interfaces and can access different networks, through which diverse services can be provided for end users. Hence, resource management in heterogeneous network environment has become a hot research topic. The goal is, on the one hand, to choose the most suitable network which can both satisfy the users'need and optimize the resource utilization of the whole networks. On the other hand, access networks can allocate and adjust the resource usage of each session with the purpose of admitting more sessions, and improving the whole network's profit. However, the existing resource management mechanisms have not considered the variable bandwidth feature of the applications and the influence of network selection on the whole network's resource optimization, thus, a new network selection and resource allocation mechanism is needed for optimizing the resource utilization of the whole networks.This thesis firstly introduces the research status and the corresponding methods for resource management in the heterogeneous wireless environment. The network selection method based on AHP and resource allocation methods based on Game Theory and Analytical Model is described in detail. The thesis summarizes also the existing problems and the challenges related with the network selection and resource allocation.Following this the thesis proposes a network selection and resource allocation mechanism for the resource optimization of the whole networks based on the session classification. The mechanism is modeled through Game Theory and the key algorithms for dynamic resource allocation and network selection is implemented. By using the algorithms, the resource utilization of the whole networks can be optimized through dynamic resource allocation and adaptation among the sessions, and the choosing of the best access network with proper resource condition.Finally, two simulation scenarios are implemented under NS2 to verify the performance of the network selection and dynamic resource allocation algorithm by applying and modifying the EDCF and MIH module of NS2. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism can improve the resource utilization and profit of the whole networks.
