The IP network is the largest and most widely spread network in the world, but it has the inherent defects which lead to no guarantee of service quality. In order to improve utilization of network resources and provide users with high-quality services, network measurement was applied to get timely, accurate and comprehensive understanding of network performance and running conditions, which has made a great progress in its field. Network measurement is an efficient way to have deep understanding of network performance, but also an important basis for the implementation of traffic engineering. Network measurement is essential to the network management, optimization and design.This paper analyzes the defects of exiting IP network performance testing tools and testing platform. This paper proposes a network measurement mechanism that based on embedded multi-core platform, and then combines the mechanism and the traditional network testing algorithm to implement a network measurement software. The main tasks of the paper are as follows:(1) Study the existing network measurement related technologies; summarize the solution from the NTP and the IEEE 1588, which makes improvement from both hardware and software to enhance the precision of packet transmission.(2) Study the impact on the accuracy by features of existing network measurement platform and multi-core platform, summarize that the process scheduling algorithms of traditional platform restricts the measurement accuracy improvement while the multi-core platform can provide better support. Design a high-precision data transfer mechanisms based on multi-core platforms and prove the improved accuracy through experiments. (3) Design and implement the network measurement software based on that platform. This software can be divided into three parts, control plane, construct plane and transfer plane. Design the process and interaction of these planes.(4) Combined with the network measurement mechanisms, design the application of the NTP for functional extension.The experiments proved that the design and implementation of the measurement mechanisms in this paper can greatly improve the accuracy in network measurements and easily combined with other testing algorithms to meet their demands for high-precision measurements.
