Over the past ten years, WCDMA, cdma2000, TD-SCDMA and other 3G mobile communication systems have been gradually deployed in the world. Up to present, LTE systems have been commercially deployed in 9 countries and regions. Meanwhile, the world's telecommunications organizations and companies are also actively researching the LTE-A and other B3G technologies. Under the pressure of demand in data service and driven by the new wireless technologies, mobile communication is enjoying a rapid development. The application of cellular mobile communication system promoted great development of mobile communications. The outdoor areas in cities have been covered seamless with wireless signal. With the popularity of mobile communication, traffic and coverage requirements are also increasing. In order to improve network quality and increase customer satisfaction, indoor's wireless coverage has increasingly become the focus of network planning and optimization. Propagation environment is the basis for mobile communication systems, the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves and radio propagation characteristics of wireless environment must be studied deeply to ensure that the wireless channel can provide high-speed and reliable data transmission for mobile communication systems. The first part of this paper introduces the research background, the main work and the content arrangements. Chapter two describes the characteristics of wireless channel and the basic propagation mechanism of electromagnetic waves. The study and analysis of outdoor propagation models are showed in the third chapter, mainly including the common outdoor propagation models and the optimization and application of Berg Model. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the features of indoor propagation environment and some indoor propagation models, and focuses on the application of ray tracing technology. Chapter V gives a typical example of indoor environment to show the design and implemantation of ray tracing technology. The last chapter gives the conclusions of this paper and discusses the future research of wireless channel and propagation models.
