H.264 is the newest video coding standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group which contains many advanced video coding technologies. Compared to other existing video coding standards, H.264 has made a big progress in coding efficiency. However, the coding and decoding complexity of H.264, which adopts complex RDO mechanism and temporal/spatial prediction, is much higher than that of the former standards. The complexity of encoder and decoder is twice and three times as high as H.263, respectively. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the algorithms of compression coding in order to improve the coding efficiency, especially in the real time applications.This paper introduced the background and application of video coding., the structure of encoder and decoder and the key technologies. Deeper research was taken on the intra-prediction method of H.264.Major focuses of the work were listed as follows:Based on mode decision and the high correlation between SATD and RDO, this paper proposed a fast mode decision method. The experimental results showed that the new scheme was able to achieve a reduction of 60%encoding time without considerably performance loss; Bidirectional Intra Prediction technology was also researched, aiming at the ineffectiveness of the preview algorithms, this paper proposed a fast bidirectional intra prediction method based on the strong directional character of intra prediction, and experimental results showed that a better coding efficiency was obtained:it was able to achieve a reduction of 40%encoding time on average and with a negligible performance loss.
