With the rapid popularization of GSM network, SMS as a basic service of GSM network has been regarded more and more important, and various kinds of applications based on SMS have been rapid developed.Many kinds of expensive and intelligent instruments are used in more and more scientific research area and practice area. It requires the instruments should be in a reliable and stable working environment to ensure the accuracy of such instruments. Therefore, it shows highly importance for us to monitor instrument working environment and timely send the collected real-time data to data centre or any designated personnel.This design presents an instrument environment monitoring system based on GSM,this paper first presents the system design as a whole, then presents the hardware and software design of this system. Finally, the system has accomplished functions including measuring temperature and humidity in real time, and sending measuring results to data platform or the instrument user's mobilephone by short message at any time through GSM network. The hardware design of this monitoring system is mainly made up of two parts, one is the monitoring part, composed of PIC18F4520, LCD circuit and sensor measuring circuit, which is mainly responsible for accomplishing the monitoring of analog variables, and display the monitoring status on LCD in real time. The other part is wireless modem, composed of TC35 wireless engine and peripheral circuit, mainly accomplishing the sending of short message. The monitoring system software is designed with MAPLAB Intergrated Developing Environment that Microchip designed for PIC single chip machine and MCC18 compiler. The software of the system includes single chip machine initial configuration, measuring temperature and humidity by sensor, sending short messages by GSM module and LCD interface design.This design has finished the work including hardware and software design and PCB design, and debugging. In addition, the sample of this monitoring system has also been completed. The measuring results have shown that the work of this system is steady and reliable.
