With the rapid development of information technology, modern communication system has developed to be smaller, high performance and integration. As an important part of the communication system, the logical structure and performance of antenna directly affect the performance of the whole system. Microstrip antennas are be widely concerned as soon as they were proposed, because they are good at lightweight, small volume, thin section, easy conformable and so on. Therefore, the designs of small-size, broadband and multi-frequency microstrip antennas have become one of the hot topics in the field of antenna research.With powerful optimization, intelligence algorithm is utilized to optimize and design antennas automatically, which has become an important trend. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a typical evolutionary computation technique inspired by social behavior of bird flocking. It is simple in structure and easy to be realized. In recent years, PSO has been widely applied in circuit optimization, dynamic problem, neural network training etc. In this paper, PSO and its application in microstrip antenna are studied. Adaptive adjustment factor, Chaotic optimization algorithm and Differential Evolutionary (DE) algorithm are adopted to improve PSO, then a new hybrid Adaptation Chaotic Differential Particle Swarm Optimization (ACDPSO) is proposed and applied in the miniaturization, wideband and multi-frequency antenna designs. Specifically, two sections are included just as follow:(一) the improved PSO and its verification of functions. Considering the faults of PSO, propose ACDPSO by introducing adaptive adjustment factor, chaotic optimization algorithm and differential evolutionary algorithm. It is verified that the optimization has greatly optimized the previous sectional solutions by testing six typical functions. ACDPSO has speeded up the rate of convergence.(二) The application of ACDPSO in antenna field. ACDPSO combined with HFSS is applied in the microstrip and fractal antenna design which containing miniaturization, broadband and multi-band antenna.
