With the rapid development of society and economy, the risk of global disaster has intensified. Various man-made disaster or natural disaster occurred frequently, and it has become one of the problems that all mankind must face up. Disaster is sudden, destructive, and public, so it has huge news value for the mass media and has become the important content that the media like. The digital images cause the attention of the media. Newspapers, television, networks are involved in using digital images and by this they have gotten huge communication effect. In order to obtain good communication effect, the media always use digital images in the process of disaster report. Meanwhile many problems have emerged. Such as, in order to attract audiences, the media choose some images with blood and death. Many journalists only stress professional responsibility and are lack of social responsibility, and they only shuttle but ignore life. Many editors neglect the bearing capacity of the audience, etc. Rooted in the current social status, the paper combines these problems and makes in-depth research and analysis.The introduction mainly introduces the research background, research contents and methods, etc. The main of the paper include three parts. It takes the choice and spread effect of disaster news as the study center, and is divided into three chapters.The first part introduces the definition of disaster, and points out that the disaster is destructive, sudden and public, also it pointes out that our country is in the period of that disaster occurs frequently. In the face of frequent disaster, the mass media constantly update the mode of transmission, and take various measures to attract audiences. Using images has become a main means. The paper analyzes the spread advantage of images in the disaster news.The second part is one of the main contents, and it discusses the selection principle of the disaster news images. It mainly includes the following aspects: First, insist the objective, authenticity principle; Twelfth, choose disaster news images based on the audience, including the audience visual characteristics and their peculiar psychology in disaster; Third, consider the ethics of disaster news, adhere to social morality, insist on humanitarian and journalistic news ethics and keep moderation principle; Fourth, consider the aesthetic value of disaster news images.The third part studies the communication effect of the disaster news image. We firstly analyze the factors which influence the spread effect of the disaster news image, including disseminator, narrative paradigm and the audiences. Then study the effect and application strategies of disaster news images from agenda-setting theory and using and meeting theory.Image has become the indispensable part of disaster news report. It is very important for media how to make full use of image transmission advantage and play its role in public communication. Disaster news is different from the ordinary news, the selecting and using images is also not like other reports. The media should consider from the state, society, the audience, victims and so on according to the disaster. By this way, we can achieve the desired effect of communicating.Paper integrates some basic theory from journalism, communication, the disaster psychology, aesthetics, and use content analysis, comparative analysis, the methods of literature review, and so on. I wish that the paper can provide certain reference for mass media when they choice or use images in disaster news.
