This paper, based on the upgrade of an operation support system of a mobile telecommunication service provider, discusses the corresponding network design technology involving primarily the network topology design, the network hierarchical design, layer 3 switching technology, VLAN segmentation strategy, routing protocol selection and firewall technology. It elaborates on the idea, principal, design, construction of the layer 3 switching and the diversity of access methods the layer 3 switching entails. The detailed configurations of Cisco router, layer 3 switch and Cisco PIX are also given. It also explains on the basis of a concrete case of a mobile telecommunication service provider the architecture of supporting network, the network scheme and security management. In network design, it analyzes layer 3 topology, VLAN segmentation, layer 3 switching, EIGRP routing protocol, and PIX firewall configuration. At last, it examines a diversity of access methods like VPN, GPRS and WLAN. As for network security, corresponding designs are put forward according to various application conditions and various security levels, network optimization involving techniques and architecture updates such as network traffic watching, application traffic management, security threats managements are exemplified; As for GPRS application, a typical successful example is given, GPRS network access, security, bandwidth issues are introduced along with a solution for wireless mobile service business halls, a better solution for GPRS value-added business; As for exchangeable access between office network MSS and accounting network BSS, popular software routing Routeros' VPN configuration and security control are presented in detail, and possible questions in debugging process are also explained; the architecture, the security issues and measures, solutions of WLAN are also discussed through examples. The port from layer 2 switching to layer 3 switching shows great performance increase and with the aid of network management software, the security, protectability, extensibility of network are considerably improved.
