One area of satellite communications technology is the deployment of very small aperture terminal (VSAT) networks for data communications. The components of a VSAT network are the hub earth station, remote earth station, and a network management system. The disadvantages of a VSAT are the low costs of installation and maintenance, the optimization toward large networks, have a perfect network management system. remote sites are unattended, startup, running, management, maintenances of remote sites are achieved through network management center on the hub earth station. This article analyses the requirements of the VSAT network management system, make a summary of problems about unattended remote sites, and introduce the solutions for this problems. Additional the paper discussed the flow about main/standby links changeover, remote adjustment of uplink power, remote update and maintenances of software. The network management system has been in use for near upon two years. The act of startup, running, management, maintenances of remote sites have realized. The network management system has a very broad foreground of applications.
