With the economic development of our country and the continuous improvement of people's life, the number of private car ownership is increasing. It's convenient for us to take a travel by car, but lots of cars lead to a lot of traffic problems. Automotive collision avoidance radar system has been paid more and more attention to by the major automobile manufactures and consumers for it can avoid traffic accidents and protect personal safety effectively. In recent years, FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) microwave collision avoidance has been the key technology on the automotive collision avoidance radar research and development. However, due to its high price, microwave automotive collision avoidance radar systems now can not be popularity applied to the middle and low vehicle. Reducing the cost, it's a hot point in the research of radar system. The cost of antenna is a big component of the cost of e radar system. Microstrip antenna has many advantages such as light weight, ease of integration and available in volume. It's a good method to use a microstrip antenna to take the place of the aperture antenna or the mechanical scanning antenna, which are commonly used as collision avoidance radar antenna. Based on this idea, a 4*14-patch microstrip array antenna has been designed in this paper. The main context of this paper includes:1. Based on the theory of rectangular microstrip antenna, parameter values of a rectangular microstrip antenna, which is used as the element of the microstrip array antenna with a resistance of100Ω, are obtained. With the assistant of computer software, optimized parameters are obtained correspond to the theoretical ones.2. With the optimized parameters of the element, a 4*14-patch microstrip array antenna is designed under the requirement of high gain and narrow beam. Simulation results show that the horizontal plane has the 3dB beam-width with a side level 8.8 of -20dB, and the vertical plane has the 3dB beam-width 18.7 with a side level of -13dB. The results show that the microstrip array antenna, which is low in price, can be used as the microwave automotive collision avoidance radar antenna.
