Traditional distributed system monitoring technology mainly focuses on the systems that are deployed in the same physical area. As the distributed systems are deployed in different areas of the world, the concept of wide area distributed system is introduced. Due to the network security, high latency network environment and multi platform issues, traditional distribute monitoring technology can't monitor wide area distributed systems sufficiently.This paper elaborates and analyzes the traditional distributed system monitoring technology. Based on the characteristics of wide area distributed system including wide areas, long distance transferring, complicated network environment and high security requirement etc, this paper summarizes the requirement to build wide area distributed system monitoring technology. Based on that, the Java RMI based wide area distributed system monitoring technology is proposed. Java RMI provides remote transferring mechanism without platform dependence. And a multi-level monitoring model is introduced to provide high efficiency and security for system monitoring. Distributed node information exchange protocol and routing algorithm support the communication between different distributed nodes. Plug-in built architecture brings flexibility and extensibility. Web service based on JAX-WS makes the monitoring technology more open. SNMP plugin provides monitoring services for network devices.This paper presents the architecture design, detailed design and key implementation of the monitoring technology. A case study helps to introduce how to leverage Java RMI based wide area distributed system monitoring technology in real world. And the performance statistics provide evidence for the usability and efficiency of the monitoring technology.
