The user interface connects the user and product, which attaches a great importance in user experience. As a main part in user interface, the graphics make sense in search greatly. Graphic design is not only a vision design, but also a graphics metaphor design. This thesis is based on the theory form design, esthetic, semiotics, cognitive psychology and kansei engineering, to learn the graphics design and cognition research.Icon is one of the important elements in the graphic user interface (GUI). The relationship of metaphor and recognition is investigated in the experiment of icon design and recognition. The experiment is mainly composed of three stages. Designers and users identify icon meanings separately, and we analyze the reason of different icon meanings. Next, designers design new icons. By the way, we can see the new icons and the old ones in this stage. We find the difference design of them. The third stage is an evaluation test on all of icons. The effect on metaphor of icon design can be known after users evaluate the new icons and the old ones together.Comprehensive the process of experiment, we have summarized of relationship between the icon design based on metaphor and cognitive. Icon metaphor is built on basis of analogy. Users could understand the relationship of icon meaning and metaphor through deduction, induction, association and other ways of thinking. In this process, users could have better understanding of the icon cognition by learning the relevant rules and adapting to user interface scenarios.
