The recent trend is towards the use of a variety of sensors in the home environment and this may involve for instance, health monitoring, habitat observations, etc. With the extensive use of the home wireless sensor network (HWSN), it becomes possible for occupants to collect environmental and activities information at home on a 24hour basis and this means that there is a clear need to protect both the privacy and security of such sensitive data. A privacy and security aware home sensor system (HSS) has been built which is based on wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies. HSS is a sensor information aggregation tool which is designed to provide intelligent home services. The focus of this dissertation is based on the privacy and security problem relating to HSS and the main issues involve the protection strategies of HSS. These strategies include feature removing, equal division, sensor number increasing, error rate augmentation, et al. In addition, theoretical privacy is discussed based on information entropy, and a formula of system privacy degree is introduced to describe the privacy level of HSS. A risk assessment approach OCTAVE-Allegro is introduced to address the HSS information security risk management. In addition, a home sensor system has also been developed using some kind of sensor nodes of Crossbow Company and TinyOS platform in order to conduct a practical test against the protection strategies. The strategies are executed both on the system sensor node side and the computer server side. The results of the experiments are given, which show that HSS can satisfy home users' privacy and security demand under certain conditions.
