VANET (Vehicle Ad Hoc Network), as one form of the wireless mobile ad-hoc network, supports services for among vehicles or between vehicles and Infrastructure. VANET has become the emerging mobile ad-hoc network, which is attracting more and more professionals to research. At the same time the effective communications between vehicles makes the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) emerge as the times require. The term intelligent transportation system (ITS) refers to efforts to add information and communications technology to transport infrastructure and vehicles in an effort to manage factors that typically are at odds with each other, such as vehicles, and routes to improve safety and reduce vehicle transportation times, and fuel consumption.ITS includes lots of applications such as co-operative traffic monitoring, control of traffic flows, collisions avoidance, information services and real-time detour routes computation. ITS has two types of communications which are Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (Ⅶ) and Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC), while IVC is one of the most important part of ITS. Because the traditional flooding protocol can easily lead to network congestion or even network storm, there are lots of professionals have proposed their own protocols based on the research on IVC. But most of them have their own limitations, such as OVB-CAST and an emergency broadcast protocol, named BROADCOMM, which can only work in a simple highway network. For this, this paper author designed a new broadcast protocol (NBPIS) for information services in VANET. NBPIS is a broadcast protocol based on WAVE architecture. It can broadcast the message to the appointed direction as the application reguirement and also transmit the messages to all the nodes with low delay and low effect on network load.In This paper, the author analyzed the classes of applications on IVC and their relevant protocols. After this, the author also studied the NCTUns simulator and implemented the NBPIS protocol on it to prove the correctness and effectiveness of NBPIS comparing to the OVB-CAST and Flood in several simulation scenarios.
