The future of telecommunications is anticipated to be an evolution and convergence of mobile communication systems with all IP networks, leading to the availability of a great variety of innovative services over a multitude of Radio Access Technologies. Users will be able to roam freely from one type of wireless access network to another while preserving continuity of their connections. The heterogeneity brings various fundamental challenges. In order to offer ubiquitous wireless access, the interworking and harmonization among heterogeneous networks are considered as primary important in the coming years. Effective joint radio resource management (RRM) is needed to improve system performance by maximizing the overall system capacity and maintaining the quality of service (QoS) of traffic. If networks can be integrated in such a way that all air-interface resources can be monitored collectively, then it is possible to create a joint RRM where resource management is unified across multiple radio access technologies.Presently, joint RRM of heterogeneous system is becoming one of the hot topics. Some institutes and groups have developed and carried out key technologies, such as system infrastructure integration, radio resource management, admission control, load balancing, mobility management, vertical handoff etc..However, there are still open questions needing further investigation. This dissertation addresses joint resource management in wireless heterogeneous networks , which can reasonably and effectively utilize the radio resource. In particular, the following aspects are addressed, system infrastructure integration, joint radio resource management, joint admission control, joint load balancing and vertical handoff.Based on advanced cut-edge theory, analysis model and computer simulation, the dissertation contributes to the research of joint resource management, joint admission control, joint load control and vertical handoff in wireless heterogeneous networks mentioned above, which can be described as follows.Firstly, this dissertation studies the system infrastructure integration. As the first step to networks convergence of heterogeneous system, this dissertation describes and analysis the current popular infrastructure integration models. Advanced management functionality is required to support the cooperative networks concept. This dissertation introduces advanced signal processing theories, which pay the methodology way for research and development subsequently.Continuously, this dissertation focuses on the issues in the order of joint radio resource management: joint admission control, joint load balancing and vertical handoff. After analyzing existing schemes, this dissertation proposes a more effective policy based resource management scheme. The dissertation describes the scheme method, theory, function module and algorithm steps. Policy-based joint admission control aims at offering detailed policy procedures based on multiple service types, esp. VHO service.Thirdly, this dissertation studies the load control scheme, joint load balancing. An evolution game theory based load balancing is given. The problem is modeled as a game and optimized according to the self-learning.Fourthly, the dissertation studies vertical handover of mobility management. The profile from network, users, terminals and service need jointly considering. A synthetical decision-making mechanism need to be devised. The scheme presented in this dissertation is divided into two steps. The first step takes example of cellular network and UWB network. The detailed algorithm offers mathematical model and simulation after the vertical handover procedure is offered. The second step extends the scheme to the general level. The algorithm considers four criteria comprising of network load, RSS, velocity of MS and network cost. Fuzzy logic based multiple criteria decision-making is demonstrated as well as simulation and analysis results. Finally, the conclusion is presented as well as future research trends.
