As an essential component of quality education of higher education, public art education is not only an important way to implement aesthetic education for university students, but also the fundamental requirement to develop university students’ moral, intellectual and physical essence. Based on the existing issues of public art education of universities in Yunnan province, the paper endeavors to explore a suitable way to further public art education of universities in the multi ethnic regions.As a province located in the southwest frontier, there are 25 ethnic minorities except Han people living in this area for several centuries. Each ethnic minority has its own ethnic folk art and culture. However, the public art education in most colleges and universities in Yunnan province is relatively backward, especially in teaching idea, teaching mode, curriculum setting, teacher resources, teaching management and so on. In view of some problems existing in the public art education in colleges and universities in Yunnan Province, the paper focuses on five universities in Yunnan to conduct a field survey for public art education curriculum. And the paper adopts the questionnaire of the empirical quantitative research to investigate both students’ and teachers’ attitude towards the public art curriculum and the problems. The paper aims to explore an effective way to develop public art education in colleges and universities in the multi ethnic areas by field survey, induction & consolidation, comparative law and literature search.The paper expounds the research background and significance, defines the basic concepts of art education and public art education, reviews the current researches both at home and abroad and illustrates the research methods and framework. The paper also reviews the significance, the development and the connotation of public art education of universities. On the basis of empirical investigations, the paper expounds the basic situation of public art curriculum and the problems to be solved so as to put forward the corresponding solutions for the development of public art education of universities in Yunnan province.In the end, the author puts forward the following solutions:(1) Broadening the field of curriculum and improving the scientific arrangement of curriculum;(2) Implementing management system innovation and perfecting course evaluation mechanism;(3) Strengthening local characteristic course and highlighting the local ethnic arts;(4) Strengthening the construction of teaching staff and take effective measures of incentive.
