Abstract/Summary:
Québécois writer-director Xavier Dolan is an exceptional new power appeared in the international filmdom for the past few years, as well as a representative of contemporary auteur system. In the year of 2009, his semi-autobiography I Killed My Mother shone over the circle, which has brought him more attention from European International Film Festivals. Then, his following three works has witnessed his breakthrough on artistic expression and the progress on grand-themes narration, thus along with the applause and awards are highly anticipations. When it comes to 2014, his fifth feature Mummy turned him into a “Hot Mainstream Star” other than “Festival Favorite”.Based on the theme of “Impossible Love”, the dissertation manages to research and analyze the context and image style of Xavier Dolan’s works. Thus, this dissertation highlightedly studies the complicated mother-and-son relations, identity recognition of man-and-woman, and individual loneliness in Quebec, preliminarily making a definition on “Plight of Love”. Meanwhile, studying the multiple expressions of “the clash of desire” in the five features, reflects “the Failure of Love” from another perspective. Ultimately, this dissertation makes a further analysis on the image style and artistic skills, to figure out Dolan’s diversified presentations on loneliness, desire and emotions.Xavier Dolan puts his focus on the marginal crowd and those heterogeneous characters, objectively but sincerely narrates the crisis they are beset with, as well as the undergoing transition sprung by these crisis. Exquisite composition, fully-designed color, static and dynamic shots, Surrealistic elements, narrative soundtrack, abundant artistic metaphor…However, there’s mainly one theme in Dolan’s all feature films: solitary individuals in a strained relationship, go through the crash of desire, finally lead to the situation of “Impossible Love”. The thematic analysis is not only focused on the narration and image of films, but also the director’s attitude, recognition and inspiration on life and society.
