| As one of the few most famous English female novelists, Jane Austen is famous for her humorous and ironic writing style,which makes her works worth studying. On the basis of numerous studies on “Pride and Prejudiceâ€, this thesis tries to analyze the conversational implicature of the masterpiece from the perspective of pragmatics, to be specific, Grice’s CP and Conversational Maxims, Austin and Searle’s Speech Act Theory; Lakoff’s View of Politeness, Brown and Levinson’s Face Theory and Leech’s Politeness Principle(PP). By analyzing the selected classical conversations from “Pride and Prejudiceâ€, this thesis draws the conclusion that the reason why people often violate the conversational maxims and employ indirectness in conveying what they really mean in the conversational interaction is Politeness Principle, that is, people can avoid embarrassment and conflict by expressing their true feeling implicitly. And the study on conversational implicature by combining the world famous masterpiece with CP and PP will definitely improve our appreciation on “Pride and Prejudiceâ€, let along relative theories to CP and PP in the field of pragmatics. |
