| This thesis attempts to analyze the conversational implicatures of Chinese talk show from the perspectives of pragmatics.Three theories are employed in this thesis, i.e.Grice's Cooperative Principle (CP), Leech's Politeness Principle (PP) and Brown and Levinson's off-record strategies. They are carefully reviewed to provide a clear theoretical framework and tool for analyzing the conversational implicature and indirect expression. The main body of the thesis is the elaboration of the conversational implicature caused by the selected examples from Chinese talk show program. The cases are classified into different categories in conformity to the linguistic realization types of the off-record strategies and made a comparative analysis. The main participants of the talk show are the interviewer and the interviewee, who usually violate certain conversational maxims and generate conversational implicatures by means of off-record strategies. One purpose of violating CP is to convey a potential implication in consideration of politeness. In order to reduce the face damage to the hearer, the speaker always expresses his/her real meaning and feeling in a seemed politeness way at the expense of the CP to avoid the direct confrontation, embarrassment or other negative consequence. This thesis has elaborated the generation, interpretation and comprehension of conversational implicature of the specific case by use of the above mentioned theories of pragmatics. In order to understand the conversational implicature better of the interviewer and the interviewee, the thesis will analyze and investigate from the perspectives of the host and the guest respectively. Hopefully, this thesis can help the audience better enjoy and understand Chinese talk show, and maintain the stable and harmonious relationship in real human interaction. Finally, limitations of this study and suggestions for further studies are provided. |
