America is a country with reform color, extremely respected freedom and democracy. In a variety of American reform, the Prohibition Movement which aimed at limiting the personal habits is undoubtedly unique.It originated in the colonial period.Thousands of people enthusiastically participated in the Prohibition Movement.In 1919 the adoption of the eighteenth amendment pushed the Prohibition Movement to the peak.While fourteen years later, the Prohibition Act was abolished by the twenty-first amendment.The Prohibition Movement ended in failure.Although the outcome of the Prohibition Movement was not successful, it lasted for more than a century and has deep research value.Undoubtedly,The Prohibition Movement is a great case of America during the period of social transformation in the late 19 th and early 20 th century.Religion is the spiritual source of the American nation. Many famous reform events in American history were deeply influenced by religion,including the Prohibition Movement.The Protestant almost throughout the entire course of the Prohibition Movement and became a great driving force to push forward the development of the Prohibition Movement. This article attempts to take religion as the main line, in-depth study of the Protestantism’s effort in the different stages of the American Prohibition Movement.Then we could have a more delicate,thorough and comprehensive investigation on the relationship between religion and the Prohibition Movement.This article is divided into the following sections:The introduction mainly introduces the background, research ideas and methods described herein, and the research status of the subject of the sort.The introduction part mainly involves the background, research ideas and methods.Then the author combed the research status of the subject.Part One:Analysis the US early drinking customs and religious composition.First of all, the author discusses the origin of drinking customs and early alcohol consumption in the United States. Secondly,the author analyzes the early American religious composition and the development situation of Protestant.Through above two studies, we could pave the way for next analysis of religion and the Prohibition Movement.Part Two-Four:Explore Protestant measures taken by Protestantism and their respective characteristics in the stop drinking stage,development stage and the period of decline.Author put the Prohibition Movement in different periods under the specific social background and research the specific measures which Protestant taken while coped with the changes in the society.Part Five:The overall evaluation of the action of the Protestant in the America Prohibition Movement.By analyzing the promoting role and historical limitations of religious participation inthe Prohibition Movement,We will provoke the deeper level thinking of religious and social reform.
