An Analysis On The Reasons Of Students’ Movement In America In The Context Of Socail Transformation In 1960s

This thesis focuses on the period of the 1960′s in the US where the social changes of this era are huge. In this particular historical stage,The economic development of the U.S. entered a “golden times” as she completed the social changes in industry and urbanization to the post-industrialization and post-industrial urbanization. The economic developed vigorously and had an influence on all levels of the society in America, it changed the structure of the industry and composition of the social stratum(class), all these changes caused the migration and mobility of population, and the way of living;and with the development of the economy, American traditional culture and values also changed,which had an influence on the living styles and ideas of the American.At this moment,the value system pursued by the Americans was broken by the past-war development and transformation of the society, the young people lost the authority guides, so they lost in the feelings of confusion and helplessness in the unstable situation. The young group is energetic and curious, likes chasing fashion, making a conspicuous show of their characters and also likes to renew their ideas. The young people are eager to stir up other’s concern, put forward a different way of life and try to impress others by appearing novel and unique personality. In the name “of freedom”, young students’ common rebelling mind brought all the things into resistance, which including all the norms of social conductions, behavior regularities and moral restraint.The changes of the American industrial society to the in post-industrial society which brought the abundant society, and the problems just like the diseased society, the flood of new-born baby and so on, these problems make the American society into a unprecedented situation, all situations triggered the crisis of the American industrial civilization, the American society transformed from traditional industrial society producing model to the abundant post-industrial social consumption model. After war, The American society experienced several important changes which constitute the social and cultural soil of the American students’ movement in 1960′s.In the new social background, the philosophy of life and the way of living of the young generation had earth-shattering changes. The father generation adapted to the puritan life style which is cast aside by the young people, and gradually turns to another pole. The real world and the traditional values were overhauled and made the society non-standard, and then the young people felt angry because they thought they were betrayed by the main trend social value system, it was not at all surprising that the young students rose up against the society.The research of a generation lost, can only start from the environment then, grasp the social changes, and the ruin of authority value system, of students who show their personalities. And this kind of mentality led to their dissatisfaction with the status quo, so to seek changes, to pursue all different from the present, which caused the vigorous student movement.
